We’re all familiar with the phrase: “you only have one chance to make a first impression,” and this is especially true when it comes to temporary employment. Instilling a strong sense of motivation, dedication and professional versatility within a short amount of time is not a simple or straightforward task by any means, but it can be accomplished. When done successfully, it may even lead to an opportunity for permanent employment in the future.

Be Prepared

Nothing is worse than an employee who shows up late or without the proper attire, but this is issue is compounded when it occurs with temporary employees. Because temporary staff members are usually called upon to assist in time sensitive or mission-critical projects, it is crucial that you show up to the job on time and ready to work. If possible, don’t be afraid to ask for some additional responsibilities or extra hours, as your employer will certainly be grateful to see the motivation on your end.

Conversely, if you are going to be late or absent to a shift, make sure to give your employer as much notice as possible. Lateness and absences, in many cases, can be understood and accommodated, but you’ll need to give your employer ample notice or you’ll risk losing your job altogether.

Take Notes

While this applies primarily to your first day on the job, always come equipped with a small notepad and a pen for taking notes. Not only is this a great way to show attention to detail, but it also helps you gain familiarity with a new workplace quickly and efficiently.

Do Your Research

One should always take some time to research a new company beforehand. You don’t have to memorize their mission statement or company history by any means, but having a little bit of knowledge regarding the organization shows both commitment and initiative on your part. The Internet can be used as a great resource for gaining insight into nearly any company, but you can also talk to former and current employees or a hiring manager at the company.

Get To Know Your Teammates

Even though you may only be assigned to a job, task or department for a short while, it’s still important to get to know your teammates. Don’t be shy or afraid to introduce yourself, especially on the first day. Make it a point to remember names and faces, and always be polite when given advice or instruction from full-time or senior-level employees. After all, they’ve been there much longer than you and, as such, they have a much better understanding of how that specific company operates on a day-to-day basis.

Ask Questions

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask any questions on any concept that is unclear or confusing. You are much better off asking someone who knows more than you, as opposed to doing something the wrong way. If a fellow employee is not available to answer your questions, seek out a manager or other senior-level figurehead before going ahead with the task.
