Today’s warehouse workers come from a unique breed that is highly prized in permanent and temporary jobs alike – including temp-to-hire gigs. With strong values revolving around independence, diligence and self-motivation, these workers are responsible for stocking shelves, picking and packing orders, ensuring timely delivery and so much more. As such, it’s critical you ask potential warehouse workers the right questions during the interview process.

“Describe a time you observed, or were involved in, a safety-related situation.”

This is a great question because it doesn’t necessarily require the applicant to talk negatively about a past employer or co-worker. It also gives you a better idea of the candidate’s overall stance toward safety in the workplace.

Were they responsible for the incident in question, or were they just an innocent bystander? How exactly did they react to the situation? Answering questions like this helps you gain a better understanding for their personal safety record – even if they weren’t involved in the specific incident.

“Tell us about a time you made a mistake at work and how you recovered?”

We’re all human and we all make mistakes from time to time. In most scenarios, the problem isn’t the mistake itself – it’s all in how we respond. Not only does this question give the applicant the opportunity for self-reflection and self-examination, it lets you know how they might react to similar issues in the future. If they maintained a positive attitude and were able to learn from their mistakes, they’ll likely make for a good and productive warehouse worker.

“How well can you handle long hours?”

Warehouse workers are often required to work long hours – sometimes 10 or 12 hours. Although it might not seem like much, this is a significant difference when your applicants are used to working eight-hour shifts.

If you find it difficult to secure talent on account of your shift requirements, try to emphasize the benefits of the job – including any overtime pay, days off and vacation time. This might be enough to convince your applicants the extra time on the jobsite is worth it in the end.
